Why does my doctor want me to have this test?
Your doctor most likely prescribed this test because you display some of the key signs and symptoms for obstructive sleep apnea. Untreated sleep apnea is very detrimental to your overall health and is known to cause many serious chronic health issues. Getting tested and treated can help your overall health, safety, and well-being.
Will my insurance cover this?
While many insurance companies cover the HST, your coverage will depend on the company and your specific policy. SAS will always verify your insurance benefits and help you choose the best option.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. HSTs are a class II medical device according to the FDA. The device cannot be legally dispensed without a valid prescription from your doctor. If you are concerned you have sleep apnea, contact us and we can fax a request over to your physician, or print this form and take it to your doctor’s office.
Why should I take a home test instead of going to a sleep lab?
There are several advantages to taking a HST over a PSG.
-
Cost is a large factor. Depending on your insurance coverage and deductable, in many cases the HST will be significantly less expensive than a full-lab study.
-
The HST also allows you to sleep in your own bed which increases comfort and the ability to fall asleep normally. This means your test results are more likely to represent a normal night of sleep.
-
Failure rates for the HST are minimal and unlike a lab, if we do not obtain a valid study on the first try, we will re-test you at no charge. The lab will bill you whether you get a valid study or not.
-
SAS will globally bill you or your insurance. This means you will only receive one bill for the equipment and interpreting physician’s fees.
-
A home test allows you to be tested and treated quickly and at your convenience; eliminating the sometimes 3-weeks wait to get into the sleep lab.
What happens if the test is positive?
A SAS employee will call you to let you know the results of your test. We will also fax a copy of your study to your ordering physician. If the test indicates you may have sleep apnea, you may be prescribed a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. After we receive a prescription from your physician, SAS will set you up with an Auto-Titrating CPAP device which will establish what pressure treats your sleep apnea in the comfort of your own home.
